We long to see the gospel of Jesus shared and the kingdom of God expressed in the Greater Austin Metropolitan area.
Greater Austin Mission Society helps the Church across Greater Austin live out its unity in Christ by building trusted relationships, understanding the city together, and supporting work none of us can do alone.
Called to Austin
Greater Austin is growing quickly and changing unevenly. More than 2.5 million people now live across the metro. More than 1,100 congregations and hundreds of ministries serve here, often with great faithfulness and little knowledge of one another.
At the same time, the share of adults who practice the Christian faith has fallen from 46 percent in 2012 to 26 percent in 2024. Around 2018, the non-Christian share of the city rose above the practicing-Christian share.

We grieve what has been lost, but we do not believe God has abandoned Austin. Rather, we believe He is calling His people to pay attention, find one another, and respond with faithfulness and hope.

The two figures are not two halves of one whole. Practicing Christians are a portion of the adults who identify as Christian, and the non-Christian share counts adults who do not identify as Christian at all. Between them are neighbors who call themselves Christian but do not practice the faith, which is why the two lines do not add to one hundred percent.

Why we exist
On the night before the cross, Jesus prayed that His people would be one so the world might believe the Father had sent Him. Christian unity is not an end in itself. It is part of the Church’s witness to the good news of Jesus.
That unity already belongs to everyone who belongs to Christ. It does not require one institution, one tradition, or one strategy. It does require relationships strong enough for the parts of the body to know one another, learn from one another, and work together in love.

That is why the Society exists.
Helping the parts find one another
Christ is the head of the Church, and the Spirit gives it life. The Society does not govern churches, speak for them, or own their work. We serve as connective tissue, helping leaders build trust, understand the city together, and carry the follow-through that collaborative work requires.
Christ has distributed gifts throughout His Church that no congregation or ministry possesses alone. The Society helps those gifts find one another for the good of the Church and the city.

We bring careful research and local knowledge together so leaders can pray and act together with strategic clarity.

We help churches and organizations share responsibility for needs and opportunities no ministry should carry alone.
Shared Work Taking Shape
The Society is currently serving alongside leaders in three developing areas: church planting, leadership formation, and disciple-making and church multiplication. Each effort belongs to the churches, networks, and leaders carrying it. The Society comes alongside where invited and helps partners carry shared commitments forward.

We are strengthening relationships among leaders who plant and support churches across Greater Austin.
Leadership Formation
We are helping leaders explore how Christian leadership can be formed for this city and this moment.
Disciple-Making
We are connecting practitioners so they can learn from one another across churches, networks, and traditions.
